Grand Covered and Grand Spice Bazaar The Grand Bazaar (Turkish: Kapalicarsi, meaning Covered Bazaar) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with more than 58 covered streets and over 1,200 shops which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. Opened in 1461, it is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods, with special areas for leather coats, gold jewelry and the like. The Grand Spice Bazaar, (Turkish: Misir Carsisi, or Egyptian Bazaar) in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the oldest bazaars in the city. Located in Eminonu, it is the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. Inside Grand Spice Bazaar you can find rustic stalls, displaying mountain of colourful spices, teas and candies. It is also the best place for lokum (Turkish Delight). Turkish Carpet and Leather Shopping After the Spice Bazaar we will visit a locally owned and operated Turkish carpet store learn about the ancient crafts of our handmade rugs. Rugs produced today in Turkey are generally very beautiful and high quality. In the late 1970s the government began a program to improve the quality and profitability of the rug industry. The program reintroduced the use of natural dyes and traditional weaving methods. Thus, DOBAG (a Turkish acronym meaning Natural Dye Research and Development Project) was created. Turkey produces a wide variety of village and workshop rugs particularly in Hereke, which also produces one of the best silk rugs in the world and, to a lesser extent, in Kayseria.
